The University of Graz ranks as one of Austria's principal intellectual institutions. It is characterized by an international spirit, a creative atmosphere and supreme academic achievements. So far six Nobel Prize winners have taught and researched at this second oldest university of Austria.·

The Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) Graz-Styria was institutionalized at the Faculty of Environmental and Regional Sciences and Education in 2009. The RCE Graz- Styria was founded in the context of the UN-Decade 'Education for Sustainable Development' 2005 – 2014 in 2006. RCE Graz-Styria acts as a part of an international network 'Global Learning Space for Sustainable Development' over 70 RCEs worldwide, which are coordinated by the United Nations University (UNU). In 2007 the RCE Graz-Styria has been acknowledged by the UNU and aims to raise awareness for SD in society and the university by transdisciplinary and innovative projects.
